Winter Meeting – Walton Heath

We enjoyed a most successful Winter Meeting at Walton Heath and we were delighted to field 25 golfers including five guests and a total of 30 for lunch in the Herbert Fowler Room afterwards.

The Waud Winter Cup was convincingly won by Dan Burstow with a very impressive 2 over par 74 and 38 points, this also helped him seal his customary naming as our top scratch golfer of the year across our main events and he was accordingly presented with the Henderson Trophy as well. David Johnson made the trip over from Germany and took second place with an impressive 35 points, Jeremy Waud with 34 points came in third and Alex Fleet won the scratch prize for the day with 30 scratch points. Rob McCowen won the veterans prize with 33 points – all very impressive on a cold but otherwise excellent morning on the heath.

Our guests also performed very well, with Graham Negus’s guest, Andy Mc Farlane, winning our new Honorary Trophy (presented by Doc Watson to be played for by Honorory Members and Guests at this meeting) with 36 points on count back from Mark Baldock’s son Charlie. Local man Simon Ford took third place with a solid 35 points.

Our lunch was a very jolly affair made all the more entertaining by stories old and new from our in house joke telling supremos, Ian Pilcher and Patrick McGahan who were both on great form. It was also great to see Derick Fulcher, Bob Carter and Roger Goodacre at lunch time for what we hope is now etched into the diary as one of our biggest and most fun events of the year. Those with diaries that look that far ahead may wish to note Friday 30th November 2018 as the return of this fixture at Walton Heath.

The gathering of so many members also presented an ideal opportunity for President Rob Mc Cowen to show the Societiey’s appreciation to Rick Holgate as he prepares to hand over the Secretarial reins to Graham Negus in January after nine years at the helm. Rick was presented with a wine decanter and six glasses all etched with the OHJGS logo.
