Sussex Schools Match – West Sussex GC
On Sunday 24th September we fielded a team of six for our annual friendly quadrangular challenge – Hurstpierpoint, Lancing, Eastbourne and Brighton old boys competing in a scratch competition. Lancing retained the trophy after a sudden death put off against Brighton!
At lunch we were joint leaders with Brighton on 4 points out of six with Dan Burstow and Alex Fleet having won their match as did Christian Wimshurst who partnered Paul Turrell. Jeremy Waud and Mike Harrison were not on form and suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of a very stuffy Eastbourne pair.
Our afternoon pairings were changed slightly and all matches went to the 18th green to be decided. – Fleet and Burstow maintained their partnership but were sadly pipped by Lancing’s Ross Gilbert and Justin Higgo. Mike Harrison went out with Paul Turrell and after a tight match with lancing lost on the 18th by 1 hole. Our only afternoon point was from Waud and Wimshurst who secured a half, but in fairness should have beaten their Brighton opponents and were 2 up with three to play!
Never mind there is always next year and in any event the match is universally acclaimed to be a great success, being a friendly event that garners a great camaraderie between the Sussex schools.
Hurst Captain Paul Turrell presented the splendid trophy to Lancing Captain, Ross Gilbert.
The photograph below shows the sudden death putt off between Lancing and Brighton at the end of the day with Ross Gilbert from Lancing eventually beating Brighton’s Julian Hunt on the 6th hole!
