Sussex Schools 2022
The latest annual Sussex Schools match was played under glorious late summer sunshine at West Sussex GC on 18th September. After the heat of August, the recent rain had certainly benefitted the course and it was in excellent condition.
This schools quadrangular match is played between Hurst, Lancing, Brighton and Eastbourne and is 36 holes of scratch foursomes. We had 3 very strong Hurst pairs out this year of Joe White & Chris Hobbs, Paul Turrell & George Atkins and Rob Huxford & Tom Fairfax.
The mornings play went very successfully. Joe & Chris set us on our way with a 3&1 win against Brighton’s top pair. Paul & George took out the second pair of the defending champions, Lancing, 3&2. Rob & Tom ran out big winners against Eastbourne 5&4.
The usual West Sussex carvery lunch was enjoyed with Hurst on top of the leaderboard and Eastbourne close behind having won 2 of their games.
In the afternoon Joe & Chris continued their impeccable golf with a comfortable win against Lancing. Paul & George secured a pivotal win against an Eastbourne pair, winning the last 3 holes having been 2 down on the 16th tee. Tom & Rob also won on the last by sinking a long birdie putt.
This all meant Hurst won all of their matches on the day which has not been done before in this competition.
Well done to all those involved and hopefully good signs ahead for the big pairs tournaments in 2023.
Paul Turrell Team Captain September 2022.
