Spring Meeting at West Sussex GC

We enjoyed a good turn out of 17 golfers and mixed weather for a great day at West Sussex. The morning drizzle did not dampen the enthusiasm of the field and some good scores were recorded on the quite excellent golf course which was presented in tip top condition.

Full Team

The morning singles for the Gibbs Cup was won for the third consecutive year by Jeremy Waud on 39 points closely followed by Bob Carter on 37 points. The Scratch prize went to Vice Captain Mark Baldock and the veterans price eventually awarded to ‘IPC’ John Fraser after Dr Angus Stewart was declared too young!

The afternoon foursomes followed a hearty lunch (NA Budge leading the way in terms of wine consumption!) and the Petherbridge Bowl was convincingly won by Alex Fleet and Derick Fulcher with 38 points who blew the competition away into the weeds!

It was great to see past President Dudley Stratford out on the course playing in the morning as it was to see both Honorary members, Jay ‘Haas’ Williamson and Doc Watson plus regular guests Paul Davis and Steve Smith along with Paul Roper making his first appearance as guest of Michael Tims.

Stop Press – The Captains Report……………….

Report of OHJGS Spring Meeting at West Sussex GC 11th May 2016

Having been woken at 0530 by the sound of torrential rain, the prospects for our Spring Meeting were not looking good.

However, despite a wet journey down to West Sussex avoiding large puddles, the rain managed to lighten. Our President went to extraordinary lengths to avoid playing with his Captain by arranging for his house to become flooded overnight. I hope it is sorted quickly Rob. This meant we were 2 players down for our morning singles as Roger Goodacre was due to travel with Rob.

We had light but bearable rain during the morning, and this seemed to suit our reigning Champion, Jeremy Waud, who returned an impressive 39 points to win the Gibbs Cup for the 3rd successive year. He was closely followed by Bob “I haven’t played since October” Carter who was runner up with 37 points. The Veterans prize was won by IPC John Fraser (Dudley do you have the Tankard?) and the scratch prize was won by VC Mark Baldock.

After the traditionally good lunch we were out again for the foursomes competing for the Petherbridge Bowl. Fortunately the rain relented for the afternoon and this was won by the dynamic duo of Alex Fleet & Derick Fulcher with 38 points. Runners up were Angus Stewart and Bob Carter with 36 points.

All in all it was a great day with the course in excellent condition despite the recent heavy rain.  I hope we can retain this venue on our programme for next year as it is a superb venue and it would be a great shame to lose it. It is up to us to make sure that doesn’t happen by keeping our numbers up. We were pleased to be joined by our 2 Honorary Members, Doc Watson and Jay Haas, together with guests Paul Roper, Steve Smith and Paul Davis.

Members who took part were Alex Fleet, Nick Budge, Dudley Stratford, Rob McCowen, John Fraser, Mark Baldock, Jeremy Waud, Derick Fulcher, Bob Carter, Angus Stewart, Michael Tims, and Graham Negus.

It only remains for me to request that Rick Holgate returns to his Secretarial duties asap as it was a little too much for me to cope with. Please check the website for the upcoming meetings and I hope to see many of you there.
