Royal Ashdown Forest Summer Meeting 3rd August 2018

18 members and 1 guest assembled for our Summer Meeting last Friday.

It was a sweltering day with water intake vital to survival. The course was fast running and we played for the President’s Cup in the morning on the Old Course, which dates back to 1888. Despite the fact that the course has no bunkers, there are plenty of other hazards to capture any errant shots. Mark Semmence (soon to be Headmaster at Repton) managed to tame the course with a creditable 39 points. Our Captain, Christian Wimshurst was second on countback from Alex Fleet on 37 pts. Alex won the scratch prize. Mike Wimshurst managed to overcome all rivals to win the Guest’s Prize.

It was a great relief to learn that the dress code for the Dining Room was relaxed for lunch and that the traditional carvery was replaced with an excellent salad.

We then took on the West Course after lunch to compete for the Stratford Tazzas playing foursomes. A lack of buggies meant that most of us had to continue on foot, which in the heat was quite a challenge. Mark Semmence and his long suffering partner Patrick McGahan clinched victory with 39 pts. Alex Fleet and Steve Waud pipped Jeremy Rawlins and Will Carroll for 2nd place on countback with 37 pts.

The day was superbly managed by Alex Fleet who was unanimously elected to be Manager for the event next year.

Secretarial Note. M Semmence will be playing off 5 until further notice.

Our next event is the Autumn Meeting in South Wales from 14-16 September. Spaces are still available so please apply quickly.
