Old Eastbournians Match – Walton Heath 20th May 2023

We enjoyed our usual convivial 12 a side four ball better ball match against The Old Eastbournians at Walton Heath. As the photos show the weather was lovely early doors, but deteriorated to the extent that the rear half of the field got a good cold soaking on the back 9 – so it wasn’t just the Halford Hewitt then!

Our run of good form continued with a 5/1 victory taking us to a 18/7 lead in the history of this friendly event that started 31 years ago at the same venue back in 1993 – a year when we were dispatched 4/1!

All of the players used the circa 1938 ladies 2 iron to tee off, some even hit it quite well. Amazingly one group of four managed an aggregate 1 under par for the first hole using the Sussex 2 iron………

Eastbourne fielded two new young and talented players in Jo Osborne and Charlie Holden and we reposted with Charlie Parsons who also maned 18 holes at St Georges Hill in the morning and was still off first in the afternoon – just.

Our winners were:

  • Charlie Parsons and Simon Clapham 5/3
  • Rob McCowen and John Fraser 5/4
  • Matt Isepp (c) and Ryian Knapman (g) lost 2/1
  • Rob Huxford (gross 75) and Jeremy Waud 2/1
  • Rick Holgate and Graham Negus 7/6
  • Derick Fulcher & Bob Carter 1 up

We expect the match to be repeated at the same time in 2024 and we welcome golfers of all standards.
