OHJGS Seniors Norfolk Tour 2018
Twenty ‘Senior’ OJ’s attended the 2018 Tour, with 19 players and administered once again by our local man Ian Pilcher. The party was ‘headed’ by Past President Keith Jenkin celebrating his recent 87th Birthday and included other venerable OJ golfers with long pedigrees in the Society.
Competitions were played at Gog Magog GC at Cambridge, Hunstanton GC and Thetford GC, with a return to the George Hotel in Swaffham for two nights of convivial gathering, beverages and dinners. This year, the whole tour was blessed with fine sunny weather, which was a great relief after last year’s downpours.
John Fraser won the Senior Trophy for a second time, with his admirable and consistent play, highlighted with 42 points at Hunstanton, which made him virtually unassailable. However, Robert Scull also performed well over the three venues and pushed John all the way. There were some good individual venue scores also returned by Andrew Whitehead, Derick Fulcher and Vice Captain, Michael Tims.
Results: Trophy John Fraser 103 points, 2nd Robert Scull 99 points, 3rd Derick Fulcher 92 points and 4th Andrew Whitehead on 91 points.
Scull won at the Gog from Whitehead, Fraser won at Hunstanton from Fulcher and Tims tied with Scull at Thetford. A special prize for the over 80’s was claimed by Keith Turner at Thetford.
Others who attended (apart from those already mentioned) were Rick Holgate, Tim Baldwin, Dudley Stratford, Nick Budge, Tony Travers (all the way from Australia’s Gold Coast), Paul Ruddlesdin, Angus Stewart, Ian Clarke, Jim Fawcett (from France), Roger Goodacre and Willie Welch. Your Secretary played the first two games before heading to the Kingdom of Fife for more golf.
Arrangements are already in place for 2019, during 17-19 June and the first entries have already been received, including two newcomers. This Tour looks set to continue successfully and with limited capacity, an early reservation is wise.
