Mellin Salver 2019

The Mellin Competition 2019

The Mellin is an inter-schools scratch foursomes competition, held at West Hill Golf Club near Woking, for 3 age groups: over 55, over 65 and over 75.

The over 55s (3 pairs) over 2 days were represented by Jeremy Waud, Mark Baldock, Nick Budge, Patrick McGahan, Dudley Stratford, Tony Travers, John Fraser, Graham Negus and Rick Holgate.

In the 1st round we were drawn against Felsted, where we went down 3/0

In the Plate competition (for 1st round losers) we played Cranleigh in the 1st round, where we fared better, beating them 2/1.

In the semi-finals against Aldenham we went down 2/1

The over 65s (2 pairs) were represented by John Fraser, Andy Whitehead, Tony Travers and Rick Holgate.

On day 1 we could only field 1 pair, John Fraser and Andy Whitehead.

In the 1st round against Felsted John and Andy lost, so this match was lost 2/0.

In the first round of the Plate competition against Sherborne, still with only 1 pair, John and Andy won their match, thus rendering the score 1/1. In the required play-off John and Andy won, so the result was a win for Hurst 2/1.

In the next round (semi-final), on the Friday, we played against Downside, where we were up to a full team of 4. Tony Travers and Rick Holgate won their match 3/2, but John and Andy lost theirs 1 down. In the play-off Tony and Rick lost on the 1st extra hole.

The over 75s were represented by Dudley Stratford and John Waterfall. Their 1st round was a scratch, qualifying stableford, where they scored 11 points. Unfortunately this was insufficient to reach the next round, where the 4 qualifying scores were 26, 24, 23 and 21.

We all had a great time and were pleased to again reach the Saturday in the Mellin.

If you wish to be considered for next year’s competition on 10th and 11th July, please contact Rick Holgate on

Footnote from the Hon Sec.

The Mellin Salver is a very prestigious tournament played by the second 16 schools to take part in the Halford Hewitt and is played at the well renowned West Hill GC. We need our lower handicap over 55s to make themselves available for this competition.

Whilst it was a great honour to play in this year’s competition it’s obvious that I’m not suited to scratch foursomes. Please help your Society and make yourselves available for next year.
