Mellin over 55’s Tournament
The Mellin is an inter-schools scratch foursomes competition, held at West Hill Golf Club near Woking, for 3 age groups: over 55, over 65 and over 75.
The over 55s (3 pairs) were represented by New boys (youngsters) Jeremy Waud & Mark Baldock, Kit Millington-Hore & Nick Budge, Patrick McGahan & Rick Holgate.
In the 1st round we were drawn against Mill Hill, where we went down 2/1 with our final pair being victorious
In the Plate competition (for 1st round losers) we played Cranleigh in the 1st round, where we fared better, beating them 2/1 – pairs one and three coming up trumps this time.
In the semi-finals on Saturday morning against Forest we went down 3-0 and didn’t get close to a win sadly….. ??
The over 65s (2 pairs) were represented by Derick Fulcher, Rob McCowen, John Fraser and Andy Whitehead.
In the 1st round against Mill Hill there was 1 win and 1 loss. In the required play-off, Derick and Rob beat their opponents to reach the next round.
This was played against Cranleigh, where we won 2-0.
In the next round (semi-final) we played against Shrewsbury, where Dudley Stratford replaced Rob because of a prior commitment. There was 1 win and 1 loss and in the play-off John and Andy lost to their opposition, so we went down 2/1
The over 75s were represented by Dudley Stratford and Derek Pitt. Their 1st round was a scratch, qualifying stableford, where they scored 15 points. Unfortunately this was insufficient to reach the next round, where the 4 qualifying scores were 25, 24, 21 and 21.
We all had a great time and were pleased to reach the Saturday in the main Mellin, thanks to the efforts of 2 new, younger players. Next year we hope to recruit more new over 55s – hopefully David Johnson and Peter Masters can join in the fun?
If you fall in this category and wish to be considered for next year’s competition on 12th and 13th July, please contact Rick Holgate on rdholgate@googlemail.com
The Mellin is a continuation of the Halford Hewitt for 16 schools and is played in the same spirit but with less pressure perhaps!!
The winners of the Mellin were Shrewsbury
The Plate winners were Forest who knocked us out in the Semi Finals. soundless won the over 65 Peter Burles competition and Shrewsbury the plate.
