We have just enjoyed the latest warmup down at the host clubs Royal Cinque Ports and Royal St. George’s.
We were delighted to welcome 2 new members to the Society who will certainly lay a claim to a place in our Hewitt team this year and hopefully for many years to come. Will Carroll is currently teaching music (and golf) at Hurst and Joe White who is on a golf scholarship at Liverpool University where he has to suffer playing University golf at Hoylake. How the students suffer these days.
We were blessed with pretty calm conditions on both days and some fiercely competitive matches took place.
At Deal the results were as follows:-
Capt Wimshurst & Welch bt Newmarch & White 4&2
Waud & Hobbs bt Carroll & Burstow 4&2
McGahan & McGahan bt Baldock & Negus 2&1 (after some very dodgy aussie style gamesmanship).
We then retired to the Kings Head for the customary wine tasting and special bed sweetening.
An excellent curry was followed by some gin tasting at the Bohemian bar which coincided with a surprisingly early retirement by Messrs Burstow & Baldock.
Royal St. George’s results:-
Capt Wimshurst & Welch halved with McGahan & McGahan
White & Burstow bt Waud & Hobbs 3&1
Baldock & Newmarch bt Carroll & Negus 1 up (after an outrageous shot at the last by Freddie. Don’t forget to bring your fines to the main event)
We then had to suffer the traditional vegetarians nightmare carvery lunch in the Dining Room before speeding home to recuperate.
Thanks to Jeremy for his organisation of the weekend and we look forward to meeting up again for the Main Event on 5th April.
In the meantime, have a good Easter.
