The Old Hurst Johnian Golf Society has two principal functions, first to provide a structure of social golf days throughout the year for old boys and girls of Hurstpierpoint College of all different standards and secondly to represent the school in many of the competition events that exist through the public schools golfing association – of which there are several.
The most prestigious event in our calendar is the Halford Hewitt competition which is played over a six day period each Easter at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich and Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club in Deal. The event started in 1923 with Hurstpierpoint joining the event in 1930. Now in its 78th year the tournament comprises 64 teams of 10 players in a scratch event (no handicap allowance). Sadly Hurst has a poor record historically and has not produced the volume of good golfers that is required to take on the might of such schools at Charterhouse, Tonbridge, Harrow and Watsons for example, all of whom have enjoyed historical success in the event.
In addition to the society days at lovely courses like West Sussex, Royal Ashdown and Walton Heath, we have additional friendly matches against other old school teams – Eastbourne, Canford and Aldenham are regular fixtures, plus another scratch match involving Eastbourne, Brighton and Lancing in a quadrangular match at West Sussex GC.
We are very keen to welcome new members who went to school at Hurstpierpoint and of course their guests and old school colleagues to our many social events throughout the year – do join in and bring your OJ friends.
Subscriptions are paid by all members of the society via standing order or direct debit and these are currently just £ 20.00 per year.
